BLUEFISH OFFICE PRODUCTS

Environmental Policy

Bluefish has an active and open approach to environmental management.  We welcome the opportunity to share our goals and successes with our customers and suppliers, working in partnership to ensure Bluefish minimises its impact on the environment.

Our Environmental Policy

  • Bluefish is committed to:

  • Manage our environmental responsibilities including full compliance with UK regulations, in particular the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and The Packaging Waste Regulations 1977
  • Assess and manage the environmental impact of our operations

  • Exercise product stewardship in conjunction with our suppliers
  • Undertake a regular audit process and monitor continuous improvement

  • Commit to prevent pollution wherever practical within our business operation
  • Communicate our policy to employees, customers and suppliers

As a storage and distribution company, Bluefish do not manufacture goods – a fact that reduces our impact on the environment.

As a company, we do not:

  • Distribute toxic waste
  • Bulk store harmful substances or diesel fuel
  • Discharge to water, land or air
  • Incinerate waste
  • Use anything capable of emitting radiation into the environment

As a company, we do:

  • Recycle waste wherever possible
  • Offer a full range of environmentally friendly, recycled and remanufactured products
  • Insist our paper suppliers use pulp from sustainable forest and use elemental-chlorine free technology in production
  • Use internal and external electronic mail delivery to reduce paper usage
  • View internal reports on screen rather than printing out
  • Comply with current legislation
  • Encourage staff to switch off non-essential electrical equipment

Bluefish regularly reviews its activities, products and services to minimise its environmental impact.  By offering a single source solution to the procurement of office supplies, we can reduce the impact of several suppliers delivering to the same location, as well as reducing waste in the procurement process.  As a non-manufacturer, our waste production is kept to a minimum.  All paper and card is sent for recycling if it cannot be re-used within the business.  Obsolete printed letterheads are turned into A5 and A6 scrap pads, rather than being recycled.

A comprehensive range of recycled paper, office products and IT consumables is offered to our customers and is regularly reviewed and increased.

The health and welfare of staff is paramount at Bluefish and whilst no hazardous products are handled or produced, training is provided by outside consultants on forklift safety and warehouse operations.  Staff workstations are regularly assessed to conform to current regulations and category 2 lighting installed where necessary.

Our largest environmental impact is vehicle emissions and this aspect of our operation is under continual investigation to minimise this.  All delivery vehicles are diesel and were chosen partly for their fuel economy.  Servicing is carried out at the manufacturers’ recommended intervals and delivery routes and schedules are regularly assessed to improve economy and reduce mileage.

Apart from our vehicles, Bluefish does not produce any emissions.

Bluefish monitor their legal requirements through a number of sources.  Our main obligations fall under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and The Packaging Waste Regulations 1997 and we have a duty of care as producers of waste to ensure that those acting on behalf of the Company for waste disposal are competent to do so.

Bluefish is a member of the Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce whose environmental support team provide assistance with legislation.  We are also a member of the Northamptonshire Waste Network (www.northamptonshirewastenetwork.org) and in turn their CW-IC project (Cut Waste – Improve Competitiveness), which was voted the “Best Waste Minimisation Project of the Year” at the National Recycling Awards.  All sources contribute to our understanding of the legislation governing our business.

The next stage in our commitment to lessening our environmental impact is an on-site survey from Envirowise whose consultant will hopefully demonstrate further improvements to be carried into 2004.

Attached is our current action plan and following the Envirowise audit, a plan for 2003/2004 will be agreed by the Director and Senior Managers of Bluefish.
